As a non-smoker I always wondered what I was missing out on during smoke breaks. Now I know. Forever under threat of being abolished, the smoke break seems to be one of the only moments where employees maintain social contact in the workplace, even if only on a superficial level. People’s phones are becoming ever more present. While they do stimulate conversations and lead to new topics of discussion, they also result in long periods of silence. My interest lies in whether smoke breaks are dominated by human interaction or if it is about satisfying an addiction.
